I can't get the whole picture of what is (or isn't) going on from just the info that you've provided.

Yet, I can't help but wonder if the problem isn't with the pushbutton electro-mechanicals, but that the transmission is getting stuck in park. This can occur regardless of whether the car has pushbutton or manual selector.

Might wanna have your local mechanic take a look at the article on "Ultramatic Locking in Park" in SSB No. 340 (p. 4) - as cited in this site's 1955-1956 Service Index.
