Time and labor costs being what they are, I have for years daubed valve lapping compound in between the moving parts of the rheostat (make sure to get the inner ring), worked it back and forth several times, and them blasted it all out with brake cleaner. A little lube and the thing works just like new and smooth as silk. The main portion of the switch is relatively easy to take apart so I polish up the contacts with a tiny piece of 1000 paper. The result is a cool operating switch and nice bright headlights without the complexity of headlight relays.
