bobp could have the answer?
With the clear fuel filter located just before the fuel pump containing visible gas & a sediment bowl at the carb full of gas, maybe it is not vapor lock. Backfiring out the exhaust would indicate unburned fuel being ignited...maybe the coil is getting too hot and getting flakey? It sure runs great otherwise.
Thanks for all the interesting ideas, let's see how the rest of Summer goes!
