I can't speak for 1949 with its long battery but on my 1954 Patrician the cable is 40" and the ground strap is 20".

Just to close out the topic, the 18 inch cable fit! Worked great, especially after pulling out the trunk light which apparently was shorting out at several points, with that gone, all the lights seem brighter (maybe placebo). Didn't get a chance to start the car and then see if it restarts, but definitely another step closer to healthy electrics.
