In addition to the jury-rigged examples I cited above, I have also seen cars where the original wiring harness was supplanted one wire at a time, using whatever gauge and color wire was handy, just tie-wrapped to the original.

Boy, that was fun!

I hear "jerry-rigged" a lot, but have heard a lot worse.

Not sure whether that's merely a garbled form of "jury-rigged" or a mash-up with "jerry-built". The latter term refers to shoddy workmanship, which appropriately describes a lot of work I've seen on old cars.
