well, I think that the heat is intended to flow down and back under the floor of the car and out with the inrush of air, propelled by the fan as the car moves down the road. Dosen't help if you are stuck in traffic or in a parade, or worse yet, the Woodward Dream Cruise.
I have heard of guys putting a small amount of Deisel fuel in their tank to offset some of modern fuel's issues with heat, but this was for mostly pre-war cars with much lower compression ratios than the '55 V-8.

Maybe try a test run with the hood removed. Maybe block off the heat passages thru the intake manifold. Maybe reroute the fuel line ala Carib to get more fan cooling.
