picture description: 1929 Stinson Packard Diesel Detroiter Monoplane SM1B-X7654 - A cooperation with the Packard Motor Car Co. of Detroit culminated in the first Diesel engined aircraft, this Stinson Detroiter SM1B-X7654. Work took place at the Packard Proving Grounds at Utica, Michigan; this plane flew successfully in the evening of September 18, 1928, with Packard test-pilot, Walter E. Lees and designer Captain Lionel M. Woolson. Charles Lindbergh tested this Diesel-powered aircraft during a visit in Utica on August 15, 1929.

The Packard diesel motor designed by Captain Lionel M. Woolson was fitted to this Stinson X7654, and in 1929 it was flown 1000 km non-stop from Detroit to Langley, Virginia (near Washington, D.C.).

Thanks for putting that up John, you beat me to it. GM did win the lawsuit. I think it encouraged ITT to do the same. A quote from feature article I wrote for last year's Geneseo Air Show program

"An interesting side note is that ITT Corporation of White Plains, NY owned 25% of F-W through its Germany subsidiary C. Lorenz AG. In the late 1960's ITT sued and won $27 million in compensation for damage caused by Allied heavy bombardment of the Focke-Wulf factories during the war." I will leave the rest of GM's and especially, ITT's skullduggery for a different venue. It is important to remember that starting in early 1933, GM owned 30% of North American Aviation, which included Curtiss-Wright and Allison. I will never stop believing that Charlie Wilson figured out a way to finally get rid of Packard by canceling the GE J47 jet engine contract to the tune of $100 million dollars.

My grandfather and my then seven year old father drove out to Attica to see the crash site of the Packard-Verville Air Coach.

The German magazine "Hobby" pictured the 1957 Studebaker-Packard Astral Atomic Vehicle as a reminiscence of the atomic age on the cover of volume 01.2014. After half a century it now is RHF (Right Hand Flight) but for the rest in excellent condition.
