What about a new section in Packard Literature and Manuals? Put it next to Paint Chips. I think the earliest samples are 24th Series so we are dealing with only five or six years of samples here from 1951-1956. 54, 55, and 56 are the most thoroughly represented.

You're heading down the same road of thinking as I'm on, but I'll let you guys flesh out the details and make the call.

A word of caution, however, after a quick check of the parts books, it appears that the bulk trim is unique between 1955 and 1956, but I found several instances of shared materials among 48-54 models - yet, not merely carried-over from one year to the next. This would be neatly handled within a single-record of a database.

Also, you may need to wait until you have reviewed all of Roscoe's samples to see just what is available. Since we can't be sure when this card program was implemented, you might need to audit each sample against the parts books (at least 55-56 and 48-54) to check for additional model applications.

I agree about the database aspect, at least as an additional feature.

With a database, one shoould be able to display useful search results for complete Trim Sets by model in a single page with only the data we've seen thusfar. Could use thumbnails in result, then click on those to display full-size image hosted in photo gallery folder.

In order to get the material out, we are going to roll with the long file names for now.

As these images are posted, please feel free to point out any errors in naming; renaming an image is simple.

FYI, we have separated out the images and cropped them, including the full sample, with edges and the data tag. Extra manila folder makes the image larger, takes extra space and costs more to send.

We have extended the histogram to provide a fuller range of tones.

We have pointedly not touched the sample, either to alter color or correct any deficiencies like dust or fading. What we got is what you see,

Stephen is doing the last half; I'm doing the first half. He is definitely ahead of me!

If we decide a database is a better approach, we will address it after we get the images processed and named.

The man has spoken.

Brian and Howard,

I had mentioned much earlier that looking at the earlier samples that I noticed the trim codes covered more than one year. For example 2452, 2552 and 2652 all carried the same Trim Codes of 801, 802 and 803, so the same sample could be posted under each of these series or left as a single entry.

I had also gone through the 375 scans before I offered to give John a hand with this. I posted a couple of the edited Material Samples so we could get things going on what would be the most effective use for everyone out of this wonderful resource dropped into our laps.

Starting with the series designation is really the most effective way for someone, especially a beginner, to find out about his or her car. I think most folks will understand the Series and numeric model number designations in the file titles. Remember the post a while ago describing what 400, 300, 200, Mayfair, Clipper, Clipper deluxe, Super Clipper, Panamas, Constellations, etc meant? If some wants to make a spreadsheet, then they should feel free to use our file captions to do it with. Then there would be another cross-reference to the Material Samples.

A note of explanation could be put in the section if there are a lot of similar questions as to what the numbers and factory descriptions mean.

I would again like to thank Roscoe (56Executive) for donating these samples. I know I was excited when I found Trim Code 801 and my carpet.

Here are the ones that I can't fully make out. One sample seems to be missing it's card, so the obvious question is "What is it?"

If you reply, please be so kind as to include the serial number with your decoding info for each picture.

Thanks to all the experts!

And still more....

One note: in most of these some data is readable...and some is not--and I am a lousy guesser. Sometimes the complete set numbers are obscured, or one or two of the models are unclear. Anything you can di that lets us enter complete data helps.

Thank you for taking the time!

Meanwhile, I was able to download that whopper of a PDF file, containing all the samples, as originally scanned.

One thing I was looking for was the original material for the '56 Caribbean Hardtop, and I found it - the very last image. This is comparable to what packards1 kindly provided, in another thread, some time ago.

However, the tag on this card/swatch up has the model application misidentified as 5699, which is a convertible. Whoever is working on the 55-56 material, please note that the parts book shows:

6487021
55-56, Gr. 31.47438 = Fabric Roof Panel Cover material
5697
Set (N/A)
White

(BTW, citations of 55-56, 48-54, etc. in such posts by me merely point out the source parts book.)

I can't thank you enough for this!

I figure to finish processing the pix on my end (0-180) today; will start the renaming tomorrow.

Couple of technical questions for search gurus:

Stephens example starts 5622-62-72a etc Is it better to enter the full four digits for each model as suggested ear5lier? It seems to me that using the last 2 digits of the model number will lead to confusi0on with the set numbers...

Does the word set need to have spaces on both sides to work ok?

Likewise, ImitLeasidewall better with spaces between each word or fine runtogether.

Is there a difference between using spaces and dashes between parts? Does it affect the search.

Sorry to be so dumb, but as noted earlier don't want to do this multiple times.....

Thanks again
