29 packard shock seal question

After years of searching I have a shock that is useable all I need to know is what to use for a seal on the packing nut. the old one looks like leather and is rock hard. I will try to add pictures

I packed that seal on my 1929 with graphited rope as used for water pump packed glands. It did not completely seal against oil leakage because of wear in the shaft & bearings.
To overcome that problem it is necessary to mount the units up in a lathe and machine away the weld on the back that holds the two halves together.

The shaft will probably be worn and need to built up and new bushes fitted. Once all shaft play is removed the packed seal should work OK.
