looking for info on the cam area on a 1937 320 super 8 is there supposed to be an oil plug of some kind on front end of the cam, where the gears are? 651-249-7733 if you need more/better explanation.

What you are seeing is the end of the threaded portion of the cam, or the snout. To my knowledge there are no cams that are hollow that would need a plug to contain oil. Cams and mechanical followers are oiled externally.

Seems I may have things to learn

Fred, my initial answer would have been the same as yours, and no plug is listed in the 33-36 parts catalog for the camshaft and related parts though that's not necessarily definitive as the plug could have been considered an integral part of the shaft. But I've forgotten, so let me ask you, how the distributor drive gear set is lubricated, and the fuel pump push rod assembly? Are they both simply by external splash?

EDIT: Yes, the plug is indeed listed!

Funny, never heard of a plug in a cam before but there it is listed in the parts book.

Thanks Wesley, now that you've found the part# I also found it listed in the '33-'36 Service Parts List for all 8-cylinder models - just sloppy on my part that I didn't see it the first time thru. I also see it listed right back to the original introduction of that engine type (1924).

Lorie(Grandma) this is the place to ask your question, I'm sorry I can't help. I don't have any real knowledge with Packards before 1940.
I hope you don't mind but I will post your question here.

"hey any chance for pics of the engine..ex.. where things go, my pa is having a bad memory day. and I am just the nut/bolt turner."

There are many knowledge people for the 37 here and I know they can help. My father also lost his memory before passing away, now I'm trying to get his 47 back up and going.
So good luck and enjoy your time together.
Wes
