If the thick stack of gaskets goes between the carburetor base and the intake manifold, its purpose is to insulate the carburetor from engine heat in order to prevent the fuel from boiling in the carb bowl in hot weather.

TxGoat is correct. Packard used a phenolic spacer about 3/8" or 1 cm thick between the intake manifold and carb base to reduce direct heat transfer. A gasket was installed on either side of the spacer. On some models or carbs they used additional heat control in the form of a sheet metal deflector over the manifold to reduce manifold radiant heat from affecting the carb.

Here is a photo showing a typical installation. Spacer was consistent depending on carb base but the shape and use of the metal shield varied.
