A question on master cylinders.

On a dual or tandem piston master cylinder with remote fill reservoir -- is there any reason it could not be orientated vertically such as shown in this illustration of a cylinder from a British car -- only with the cylinder pointing down? Being a closed system, I wouldn't think it would matter as long as the reservoir is remote and fluid fills everything but sometimes I overlook the obvious.

Several British cars have done this and apparently some Toyota models as well -- but with cylinder up. I am wondering if there could be anything special in construction of the cylinder internals that specifically allows or restricts orientation. Does anyone know of any US cars that have done it?

Mite want to cheque mfg'er bleeding instructions for that set up.

Also check the internals of the MC. Is the secondary piston spring loaded against the primary?

Of course if u plan to use such a MC specifically designed for verticle mount then only bleeding instructions would need to be considered. Maybe no difference in bleeding.

Just another point to consider/study:

From the pic it looks like the reservoir has no seperation from the primary/secondary pistons of the MC. Most of the tandem MC's we have discussed over the years have primary and secondary as isolated reservoirs/feed to the internal pistons of the MC.

I was thinking pressure bleeding might be needed. As to internals, the only thing I could think of that might be restricting is the tension of the springs separating the pistons. They might need to change if pistons pointed down.

The cylinder in the British car illustration has two inlets. Those were shown in a picture without the reservoir. The plastic rectangle feeds one and the pointed end, the other.

What is not clear at this point is whether or not u plan to use an MC DESIGNED for verticle use or if u simply plan to use some MC designed for horizontal use mounted verticle.

THe bleeding and reservoir feed mentioned above MITE be an issue. Maybe. Maybe not.

Was thinking of the remote fill dual 1" type we have been retrofitting if it can be done.

I sincerly doubt very much that spring tension would have to change at all. Pointed up, down or any direction or orientation.

I think the only question that remains at this point is IF there is any special bleeding procedures needed that would not apply to usual horizontal mount. I don't know.
