What are the symptoms caused the the "green knobbed wonders"?

Exactly the same symptoms as with undersize battery cables, slow cranking with corresponding weak spark, and hard starting. Feel the "green wonder" while trying unsuccessfully to start, I'll bet it gets pretty warm from failure to be able to pass adequate current. I've even seen the green knob begin to melt on occasion,

It doesn't get warm, it gets HOT! It has also gotten banished. One of these days I'll learn that you get what you pay for - though I can't imagine when.

Thanks O_D, The other symptoms were right on too.

OK you guys win!

It now occurs to me that my car does crank more slowly with the "black knob" supposedly superior (but still crap) isolator fitted. It hadn't occured to me that this was the culprit until now as it starts fairly easily anyway.

So job for the weekend is to "ditch the switch". I'll go and get a rotary type one and fit it on the firewall somewhere. - At least I can then put all four screws on the battery cover on as I won't have to remove it every time I want to isolate the battery.

Dave is like our Mum! Should listen to him more...
