testing water pumps

In the 51 service manual, it has a possible cause of overheating as a leaking water pump seal, that allows water to short circuit back into the block. Any suggestions as to how to test the water pump, either on the car or on the workbench?
thanks

I've not read that section of the shop manual, but that statement is a bit confusing to me. Normally if the seal is beginning to leak, coolant will start coming out of the weep hole. I wonder if perhaps it refers to the clearance between the impellor and the backing plate? If excessive that will allow coolant to "short circuit" within the pump body and hence give lessened flow thru the system.

You got it exactly. I'm still having moderate overheating issues, even with the new large radiator. The waterpump is the only thing I didn't rebuild or replace during the engine overhaul last year. thanks
