A few pictures for your enjoyment.

Three day road trip over the recent Holiday.

600 miles in two days.

14 hours on the road, half interstate, half back roads.

Averaged 60 mph on the interstate, 40 on back roads.

(4.41 rear axle ratio + 28% Gear Vendors reduction so 60 mph is right around 1970 engine rpm)

Coldest morning 22?F.

Averaged 12 mpg.

WOW! Thanks for the pictures. The 9th series is one of my favourites. What an experience that must have been. How did the car handle on ice with those skinny tires?

Thanks for the positive comments!

The car actually handled better than I thought. Early morning fog froze on the cold roads since the temp. over night dropped to the low 20's.

Road feel with those skinny tires felt better than my modern iron and radial shoes.

Given the 4600+ vehicle weight and smaller tire to road contact patch with the skinny tires it felt like I had better grip.

Dave, That was what I was curious about. I have found that narrow tire width combined with weight over the axles makes for better contact with the road on icy surfaces.

Thanks, very enjoyable acccount of a great trip and a real adventure! The old original documents bring it all to life and take you back to when motoring was a true adventure, not just an everyday chore, mainly fighting the traffic along a clogged freeway.
