Good info...thx. Unrelated to that other thread, I'm still confused whether a standard transmission is standard equipment (no pun intended) and whether the automatic would have been an option on a 400? Or should this car have an automatic and the standard transmission is not correct. Any suggestions?

The Ultramatic was standard on the senior cars as stated in the 56 fact book. In Roscoe's posting of the Revision 4 list of build codes dated April 11, 1956, the standard transmission (code MS) and overdrive (code OD when MS was ordered) were available as an option on the senior cars (the 400 is the 5687 model)

Interesting...thank you for the clarification. I really appreciate the help being offered here. If there's anything anyone thinks I should look for (or wants me to check out for their own interest), please let me know. I will check this thread before I go see the car tomorrow.
