picture description: 1929 Stinson Packard Diesel Detroiter Monoplane SM1B-X7654 - A cooperation with the Packard Motor Car Co. of Detroit culminated in the first Diesel engined aircraft, this Stinson Detroiter SM1B-X7654. Work took place at the Packard Proving Grounds at Utica, Michigan; this plane flew successfully in the evening of September 18, 1928, with Packard test-pilot, Walter E. Lees and designer Captain Lionel M. Woolson. Charles Lindbergh tested this Diesel-powered aircraft during a visit in Utica on August 15, 1929.

The Packard diesel motor designed by Captain Lionel M. Woolson was fitted to this Stinson X7654, and in 1929 it was flown 1000 km non-stop from Detroit to Langley, Virginia (near Washington, D.C.).

I will never stop believing that Charlie Wilson figured out a way to finally get rid of Packard by canceling the GE J47 jet engine contract to the tune of $100 million dollars.

My grandfather and my then seven year old father drove out to Attica to see the crash site of the Packard-Verville Air Coach.

Is there any information on the plane with the Packard the one for 51? Where was the photo taken, or who are the people in the photo?

The German magazine "Hobby" pictured the 1957 Studebaker-Packard Astral Atomic Vehicle as a reminiscence of the atomic age on the cover of volume 01.2014. After half a century it now is RHF (Right Hand Flight) but for the rest in excellent condition.
