I returned from a short trip to hear from my mechanic today. Ross, your diagnosis appears to be correct. The stop was rotated 90 degrees from where it should have been. Maybe tomorrow everything will be buttoned up and we'll see if it will work.
Apparently the previous owner also felt that the lever was hitting the pan as it was distorted, apparently from hammer blows. Grease on the bottom of the lever didn't rub off on the pan when the shifter rod was rotated, so that interference was ruled out. The photo really did the trick. Thanks to one and all, and particularly to Ross. What would we do without the helpful folks on this site? Bernardi
