the first few times i took the body off was all man power, 6-7 guys.

the last time i used the cherry picker and load leveler, but i didn't bolt it in like you did and like what is in the pictures. i just ran a tow strap around the bottom of the car and hooked it to the cherry picker.

this time i did what youd did and bolted it to the floor. made more sense.

I hope it looks even better when i get the herculiner done, at least it will be all one color and material then.

thanks for looking guys!

Per post # 1617 (BigKev)

"Better for it to be driving with some creative license, then rusting away in a field somewhere."

I 100% agree. My 400 is a stone cold driver and I am comfortable taking her out often and most anywhere. I tried to balance originality against, costs, my talents, part availability and the desire to create a vehicle that maintained a connection to the era. She is NOT a factory Packard copy. Further, I've been told privately by people in the more formal clubs that I "should done this or that" and some even expressed slight irritation with me given the changes I made to the car. I just can't figure that emotion out?

Anyway, back to what BigKev wrote. I would add or amend to his sentiment as follows. Better for it to be driving with creative license, then rusting away in a field or dusting away hidden in a garage or trailer somewhere.

I remain thankful for this forum and the continuing pleasure I get when I visit. Hank and Kevin.........I can't wait to see your cars in person.

more like one year vs. day lol. feels like it will take a few more to finish her up.

but the wife started back school today, so it was homework for her and garage time for me so i'm not just sitting there bored.

I got the driver's side back fender area sanded with my little orbital sander and some fine sandpaper. took off all the orange color rusty looking stuff. what was left was amazingly preserved.

wiped it down with some mineral spirits...you can get the idea of what it will look like in gloss.

the before pics have all the grunge and orange rusty stuff. the after is a dull yellow, but clean.

enjoy.

Hank

while checking my linseed application on the underside of the driver's rear brake light area in the trunk above the fuel inlet cover I saw a stamping.

it had some numbers and the word KAWANNA.

pretty cool.

refer to this thread for more information.

Hank,

Lackawanna was the steel producing city bordering the south side of Buffalo. Bethlehem and several other smaller steel mills were there. Most of Bethlehem is gone now but they sure left their mess.

Your work is looking very good. Nice going!

sweet thanks!! yup i'm getting close to doing the body now, just gotta prep it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lackawanna_Steel_Company

pretty cool history with this stamp. I wonder if it was just a random stamping or if every v8 Packard has this stamp in this place. if not, then I stumbled upon something unique and preserved.

awesomeness!

did the passenger's side of the car yesterday and dulled up the rocker panel i painted all glossy. looks just like the rest of the car now.

i also did the roof. the paint was thinner on the roof so i wet sanded it.

next is the firewall...need to degrease it bad. i only had some carpet cleaner laying around and it did clean a bit, but i need something stronger with a wire brush.

you can see how well the paint cleaned up on the yellow.

i'm falling more and more in love with this car as it goes on.

i like how the water beads up on the linseed that is dried. good luck water...good luck rust...MUUUAHAHAHAHHAHA!

cleaned the outside with mineral spirits and then sprayed linseed.

also cleaned the firewall with engine degreaser and a wire brush. got 98% of all the grease off.

the under side of the car is going to be a real PITA, but that is next.

I like the shine, as usual. sure brings life back into the old paint.

getting closer to clear paint, which i'm debating on spraying myself to save money. I just don't have a way to bake it. it may be worth the 1500 for someone else to do it right. I did buy a new HVLP, which performed better on the body then my old gun.
