the shop noted that my flywheel had chips, so they replaced it. Does that happen often?

83,000 miles, FWIW

Why do they call it a flywheel? That implies lightness which is definitely not present.....

Assume the chipping was on the edge of the teeth where the starter motor engages. I would expect there would be some wear at 83K but whether it was excessive would have to be determined by someone that has seen a lot of engines.

IMO, the term flywheel is used because it is a common name that was around a long time before automatics and has become generic, easier to remember and say than flex plate and most everyone knows what is being discussed.
