RE : QUESTION - WHAT KIND OF MOTOR/TRANSMISSION COMBO TO PUT INTO THIS GUY'S MODERN HOT ROD...?

hmmm...I take it all back - on second thought, if this fellow with the modern "hot rod" car, on which is mounted the sheet-metal of an old Packard...REALLY wants performance...

As '47 suggests, he should get a 6 cyl Packard. BUT dump the stock 3 speed (often with overdrive) that it came with.

With a little machine-work, I dont see why he couldn't come up with a "kit" to adopt that marvelous ULTRAMATIC transmssion!

Wouldn't THAT be a splendid combinatiion for reliable neck-snapping performance... ?

In another "thread" John pointed out he'd read in a GM service manual, that Hydramatic transmissions need servicing. Excellent info. Good reason not to use one of those crummy GM "350"/4 speed Hydramatic variants.

May explain why so many people with Hydra-matic cars are building "adapter" kits, to change out those crummy poor-performing, unreliable Hydramtics, so that they can install that marvelous customer-pleasing Packard ULTRAMATIC transmission.

we are not worried about the originality of the car, other than the sheet metal body, which is in excellent shape. Now if I was involved with this project from the beginning it would be a different story but since the car was torn apart 20 years ago and after numerous people have been working on it, I finished it off with the electrical. has original bumpers hood ornament headlights trim etc, we want a good reliable engine and tranny to swap out the tired olds. that was put into the car. so I'm thinking the chevy 350. I don't care if everyone else uses this engine, actually it makes it better for me because its cheaper. anyway this car has to get done and I would appreciate it if you all would cut the squabbling and get to the point. Thanks,

Tobey

The 350 Chev carbureted engine with a TH350 or TH400 trans. would likely be your cheapest and most reliable combo. It would provide plenty of power, parts are cheap and dress up items are also inexpensive. Good luck.

Check with your local Chevy dealer,a crate engine is available thru the parts dept.Lots of options for performance, last one I installed was a replacement 350 and all I had to do was install the carb and acessories. You won't be able to use the BOP trany, but it sounds like all the mounts are there for a TH 350,400 or 4 speed auto.

FLjoyrider: I like the looks of your Packard. What is the color of the car?

With that color and wire wheels, whitle walls, wood running boards is a combination that I like.

As far as an engine for your Packard how about a Chevy 4.3 V6 with a turbo set up. That would make it shet and git.
