Also note that the sheet metal greas shield surrounding the spindle hides a hole (near bottom) thru the steering knuckle that needs to be cleaned or checked for debris. clean it thru back side of steering knuckle.

Pic 2182.jpg. The football shaped washer is missing at the top post under the springs. Also it appears the the primary and secondary linings are the same length. Not a problem. installed amny that way that were aftermarrket. But prefer short/long linings.
Note that the washer that is missing is supposed to be kind of foot ball shaped and not the round one that is in the "before" pic.

Yes, the washer (listed as the shoe anchor pin guide plate in the parts book, Gr. 1.406) is missing in IMG_2182.JPB, but the round one that's shown in IMG_2175.JPB is correct for 55-56 Senior cars. It can also be seen in Fig. 2 of the Brakes secton of the factory Service Manual. The round washer is a legacy of sorts - dating back to the introduction of Bendix brakes used on the 17th Series (1937) cars.

What you refer to as the football-shaped washer is appropriate only for Clipper and Exec models. I believe that's a carry-over from the smaller, 11-inch brakes that were introduced on the 54th Series Clippers. However, the part itself was actually first used on 18th Series cars (one year only) that were fitted with Packard brakes.

What about the red spring??? should it go to the top??

As a last comment, the upper springs need to have the ends bent parallel to the spring rather than so wide. No need to remove spring. Just use a pair of channel locks to bend the end parallel back toward the spring a little bit..

A little body work while I wait on my wheel seals to come in. Lots of Bondo where they just put mud over the rust. Patches roughed in,little more tweaking to go will stop here for the night.

I am in the process of removing the inner wheel well from the outer fender to complete some body work that I need to do to the fender. In doing so, I found the root cause of the initial brake failure when the car was parked 30 years back.
The tube from the vacuum reservoir had broke loose at the weld joint allowing the tube to rotate freely along with a huge leak.

Front Brakes installed and adjusted, Rear Brakes tomorrow. Reinstall the Tredle-vac and bleed and test system this week end.
Then we will finish the front fender repair, check lights, put the grill back on and be ready to tootle down the road.

All Brakes on and adjusted, new brake line in. Treadle-Vac installed and filled. Just started to bleed and it started raining. I guess I am on hold til Tuesday as it is supposed to rain tomorrow too.

Just as well, I have a couple rebuilt components to ship out to customers.
