I was reading about Mr Cummins putting his oil burner in a packard as early as 1929:
allpar.com/corporate/bios/cummins.html

He kept trying in the 30`s with amazing gas milage; over 40 mp3 in 1938!

The story of Rudolf Diesel, including his mysterious disappearance (overboard) from the transatlantic liner Dresden also makes interesting reading. Foul play has always figured in his demise, though suicide is the favored theory. Short but concise story in Wikipedia.
