I bought the belt line molding and pieces for the spare tire covers and tail-lights but the clips max Merritt sold me are loose in the hole. does anyone know what the correct ones are? also on the taillights they need to be bent slightly, I kerfed a 2x4 with a chop saw and made several small bends. that seemed to work out well.

Solution. I bought these on eBay I'll send the link. They needed the width shortened with a pliars, but they fit great. Here they're also pictured with the original and the max Merritt and you can see the problem.

The correct clips for the sidemounts and the luggage rack are the same, but hardly any car I see has the correct ones. They are flat, and have two ears. You push the ears through the hole, into the trim piece, then twist a quarter turn with a screw driver.

I believe West got his from an online company? I used AuVeCo clips with slight modification. Will try to get number tomorrow.

Think I ended up using the 807, have to use a bench grinder to make the surface or top portion of round head a bit thinner. The legs are longer than original but will not be seen from outside. I am pretty sure used the 807 for luggage rack molding. The ones for the body may have used one of the other two, again may need to make the portion that goes into the molding a bit thinner cannot fully remember. Thanks

The flat clips for the luggage rack trim and sidemount trim are not available anywhere. I was able to find a package of NOS examples from another collector. It was a needle in a haystack. The same kind of clips are out there, just not the correct size.

Got these and others years ago from Auveco. As I say the heads need to be flattened a bit to be able to slide in the grooves of the trim, and cannot remember which was used for the side trim. I looked at the Auveco website and one or two show in stock by them, but to contact a reseller.

By the way, West, have you ever come across another set of the trunk rack fold out brackets? I see trunks all of the time but first need to get the tilting brackets. If I had one I might be able to fabricate them. Thanks as always.
Also about every two years or so I ask to see if anybody has come across a 1940 rear arm rest radio head? I have everything else including the dictograph microphone and speaker. Thanks again.

these look like the Max Merritt ones. but nothing like the originals on mine. My problem with them was two fold: they are loose in the hole witch is about 1/4 inch and they are loose in the trim. with a little crushing the new ones work fine

Good news on the 1940 Packard belt line molding clips. You can get the correct Auveco 1231 clips from Restoration Specialties in Windber PA (on-line as well). Apparently they have some old stock since Auveco does not list these in their current catalog.
The clips are the exact clips used on my original unrestored 1940 160. I had the same problems that others have had with the other clips mentioned above. The other clips are too loose in the hole, they are too thick to slip onto the belt line molding, they are too wide and need to be modified. You can find them on-line from Restoration Specialties for $1.10 each but the on-line postage is quoted as over $20! Just call them at 814-467-9842 and you will only be charged their postage minimum of $12.50 so be sure to order some other things!
