What looks like a voltage regulator with 6 terminals is the relay for an R-9 overdrive.
The voltage regulator is a separate unit with 3 terminals.

The voltage regulator is not connected to the OD in any way. The two items are mounted closely together on the firewall but the regulator is more rectangular with only 3 or 4 terminals depending on brand. It is mounted slightly above and more to the left than the 6 terminal R9 OD relay.
Note that if your car has only one black box and had the generator replaced by an alternator there is no need for a voltage regulator. With the changed wiring for the alternator the regulator might have been removed. Attach file: 47 firewall.JPG (43.23 KB)
