Bob,
I THINK that is a coil base for a '39 Super Eight, on of the many one year only parts on that particular engine.
It locates the coil on the LH side of the head next to the distributor. It also provides a place for the 'theft resistant' armored wire from the switch to terminate.
Seems to a less than ideal place for a ignition coil, but it does keep the lead to the distributor short.

Back in the 80s I was vending at the Pate swap meet...one of the only guys with Packard stuff....
A local chap came to me and said that he had restored a '39 and had a pile of parts left. I got the pile and sold off most, but still have the brake drums,backing plates, front fender supports.

This is the coil on my '35 Eight, I found it online about a year ago. Packard attempted to make the cars more theft proof with the armored cable and a coil and base that prevented easily hot wiring the car by thieves. You need the coil with the ignition wire on the bottom to go with it. As far as I know this would have been on '35, '36 , and '37 seniors but I think '35 was the year it was introduced

Bill, just to round out the story, cylinder head-mounted coils predated 1935, a similar coil mounting with a cast base plate and armoured primary wire feed from the ignition switch was used in 1933 and 1934 on Eights and Super Eights, though it differed in that twin North East coils were mounted for the dual ignition system used on 8-cylinder models in those two years.

PS: I've been advised that the part number shown on the item is an AutoLite part # and thus assuming it's not an export model, it's from a 1939 Super 8, the only year AutoLite ignition equipment was used on that motor.
