Thanks for all the responses. Will take everything in to consideration and report with any findings. Worst case the floor boards are coming up I guess.

One suggestion from a friend was that the vacuum booster on the clutch was weaker when warm because of less engine vacuum. I'm thinking that it is a boost of the mechanical linkage so theoretically it should work with zero boost.

Yes, the clutch can still function normally even with a non-functional vacuum booster though of course more pedal effort will be required.

I'm curious about your friend's comment that a warm engine produces less vacuum, not an observation I've ever noted or heard about - any comments from others on this?
