Well.
Put the trans back in.. Still had the noise.

So turns out it was the starter.

Some how the spring came off..

I looked at the starter . and saw the bendix move.. Thought that it odd.

But I was focused on getting car running..

But. There is a noise at right rear wheel. So that's the next thing to see what's up.

Ross.

This is a spare. .

Spring A. Do you cut that

Or spring B. I cut spring B.

And have that where A is.

I think.. Haven't pulled pan yet..

On 56 trans I shim the A spring 1/8" to raise the direct shift point somewhat. I just drop a #10 nut in the bottom of the #3 valve before inserting the spring. I trim the B spring about 3/16 to lower the low-high shift point somewhat. I find that shift pattern much more agreeable.

On 55s and gear starts I merely shim the A spring 1/8" as their low-high shift comes soon enough.

If you increase the tension on the A spring too much the direct shift will come way too late or not at all.

Thanks Ross.

No. 3 was a pita getting out seems a berr or out of round

Spring B I cut 5/16 of an inch off. Sticks out of body about 1/8 inch.

Is valve no. 5 supposed to be easy to push in ?..

Edit.

Are those nipples on end of valves .. face each other. Or opposite..

All valves have to be able to move easily.

The nipples always push against flats.

Got it.

Here is how much the end of spring hangs out.

Ran a brush in the bores and sprayed diesel oil in there. Think there was varnish in there.

Everything thing glides free now .

Maybe the valve no. 4 was sticking?.

But have 1 more valve body to check.

Ross.

OK. I have upshifting

But. D is low

H is D

N is high range

R IS r

P is p

D.. I have Simi flush. .first shift. Which before was firm.

All shifting is at normal shift speeds.

Around 20 mph. I have not moved the linkage on throttle shaft yet.

Also I noticed the throttle valve was not closing it would stay wide open
So I bent the rod so it seats.

Your actuator motor needs to be moved slightly toward the rear to make the selections line up.

Move the throttle link back a bit for a firmer shift.
