Gear Start neutral safety switch linkage and anchor

Folks I am trying to locate the anchor and linkage for the neutral safety switch.

This neutral safety switch is unique to the '54 Gear Start and is a combo Neutral Safety switch and backup switch in one. The switch is actually good and is mounted high on the steering column near the firewall (engine side). Then it has a small piece of linkage that connects to an anchor bracket that attaches to the transmission select rod that runs parallel to the steering column.

That little anchor on mine was welded and repaired numerous times in the past. It now has snapped off and is beyond repair. So I need to source a new one, and preferable the linkage rod also that goes with it. I don't particularly need the switch, just the transmission rod anchor and linkage.

Any one have one?

Sounds like the same as my 55 Pat. Got a picture? If so I could pull same off one of my parts cars.

Craig,

This is what it looks like on my car. But, the anchor and linkage is not stock. Looks like someone cobble together an anchor, it's a piece of small threaded rod with a nut and tab welded to it that screws into the shifter tube. But they didn't set up the geometry right, and it of course broken again. When I got the car the linkage was also broken, and I make a new piece out of some thicker stainless rod. I really don't know what the actual oem anchor is supposed to look like.

Now, it a perfect world I would like to have an OEM anchor, linkage, and switch, so I know I have a good working set, rather that the cobbled pieces I have now.

Thanks!

Kev,

This is what it looks like on my 55 Pat. Also, it turns out that my 2 56 400s do not have this switch there because they are Pushbutton shift. Also, my 55 Pat parts car is missing the switch. So, I cannot help you with a used spare after all.

Craig

No worries. Thanks for looking. I may just fab something up that will work.

One more point of clarification. On my 55 Pat, that switch serves two purposes:

1) Neutral (P & N shift positions) "safety start."

2) Back up light switch (R shift position).

I don't know how your "gear start" switch is supposed to work. But you might keep the above in mind.

Thats exactly how this switch works. I think the switch is the same. Just the placement and linkage is different

The switch is a one year, gear start item only. The 1955-56 switch looks similar but is not exactly the same. Post the part numbers of the linkage pieces you need and I bet someone here will be able to help.

Rehashing this ancient thread as I'd like to get a picture of what the correct GearStart linkage and anchor looks like.

My cobbled together solution worked for over a decade, but now I'd rather try to make it work correctly if I can find the GearStart only parts or at try to fabricate something as close as possible.

Joel Ray had the anchor (455758), still looking for the other part, which should be the actual linkage between this anchor on the shifter down tube and the switch. I believe that part is 455704, but the parts manual isn't very verbose in that regard. But it is a GearStart (very late '54) only part.

This is what the anchor looks like that Joel is sending my way, thanks Joel!
