Crankshaft Weight Removal Procedure

Hi,
The crankshaft in the 1941 356 I'm rebuilding needs the journals to be ground. In order to access the journals the weights need to come off the crank. Looking at it, it appears the weights bolt on and have metal plugs in the hole over the bolt. My first thought is each plug will need to be drilled and tapped to use a slide hammer to pull them out. Would this be the correct procedure to remove the weights? Or, is there something different? Does Packard have this info in a service manual?

You have described the basic procedure although I believe in most cases the bolt heads are also drilled off to remove the weight. There is a post with some photos here along with some methods others have used. If you do a forum search for "356 crankshaft weight" you will find more posts and maybe more photos and info.

The plugs are not separate but are part of the bolt.
The bolts are 3/8" and can be removed by carefully drilling on centre down to the shoulder at the bottom of the hole in the counterweight.
Can also be removed with a spline type screw extractor and small impact socket.

BDeB....One of the tricks to remove a bolt shank that has been broken off flush is to position a large nut over the bolt end and weld on the bolt end to fill the nut with weld. Often, the bolt can then be unscrewed. Would the nut welding process work to remove the plug/bolt? Or, is the plug portion interference-fit in the weight?
