Installation instructions for 21st series Belt Moulding mirror

I purchased both left and right outside rearview mirrors for my 1947 Custom Super Clipper. Currently, only one mirror is attached directly to the trim molding with no support bracket or screws. In checking the comprehensive information on the site, found mounting instructions for the "49" but nothing for the "47."

I did find an article in the forum dated 11/14/2014, but there were no real solutions. Do any of the members have service instructions on how to properly install these mirrors? The red custom shows the plate-mounted version from the site, and the black car is mine, showing the mirror's current setup.

In checking the accessory manual for this car, the part numbers seem to be PA-374239 Left Belt Moulding Mirror - Deluxe all Clippers 1941-48 and the right hand mirror is part number PA-374238

Any help the forum can supply would be greatly appreciated!

Dave

Someone had posted mounting instructions (factory I think), but I can't find them and don't remember what series car they were for. There is this post that may be helpful, or maybe one of the contributors can provide you with more guidance.

I don't remember seeing any 42-7 Clipper install instructions on this site but seem to remember something of a brief position mention in one of the books. It would be nice to have that documentation but this same request for Clipper info has come up a couple of times before with no resolution. For the most part, before 51 Packard only provided a sheet of paper in the box with the option. Most of the install sheets were just thrown away along with the box when the install was finished.

There is a 23rd series template here and while the mounting method and base is different for that series mirror, the back of the Clipper style mirror on the curved arm as used thru 48 is positioned the same relative to the base. They are both almost dead center.

With that in mind and the fact the 21st series doors are also about the same shape as the 23rd series the dimension of 6 1/8 inches from the front door edge to the center of the base would be a good starting point. That will put the mirror almost at the front lower corner of the wind wing. Obviously operator preference also has a lot of say in the actual as mounted position since on things that required operator satisfaction, if it could fit and work satisfactorily somewhere else dealers did not necessarily follow factory suggestions.

You could have someone hold the mirror while you tried out different locations. As long as it is not too much different no one will likely know it was moved. Whatever position you choose, one thing you do want to make sure of is the wind wing can open without striking the mirror should you want to twist the mirror so it is in an elevated position on the arm. Actual mounting is just laying the spacer in the center recess of the belt molding and drilling two holes sized slightly smaller than the screw diameter thru the molding and door panel.

Thanks, Cavalier! The positioning three inches from the tip of the molding is very helpful!
