A late friend gave me a well-worn copy of the attached, the work of the much missed Bruce McCall, appearing in the April, 1979 National Lampoon. You fellow New Yorker readers well know McCall from his many inspired cover illustrations. My friend had a '47 Custom Super, before that a '53 Cavalier which, you '50s Packard fans take heart, had 135,000 miles at his demise, its Ultramatic never any attention beyond frequent ATF drains and refills, occasional band adjustments. In the early '70s, he owned a '40 One-Sixty limousine that had been Admiral Nimitz's during the war. A friend of the Chambers Brothers (Time Has Come Today), he gave them rides to Bay Area gigs as they played poker on a card table in the rear compartment.

Another friend who's owned 70+ Packards since he in high school, i upon tricycle, junior and senior, pre- and postwar, a '33 Twelve conv. coupe and several Darrins among them, said the Smothers Brothers early on had and much liked a '40 One-Sixty Model 1804, using it to get to concert dates, it having plenty of room for Tommy's bass. The only one ever getting a rawer deal from CBS than the Smothers Brothers was the steadfast, hard-working Dan Rather.

BTW, Bob and Ray did some Packard ads for the new '48s when at a Boston station. Wasn't around then, but can't imagine them pulling that off with straight faces. When on WOR in the mid '70s, they'd interject various sighs and comedy voices during General Tire commercials.

I believe the Bulgemobile featured Tap-A-Toe Futuroidic Footless De-clutching... among other incredible refinements.
