They can fail for whatever reason but there's so many out there that it can't be that big of a deal to get them working again. Idk the causes but I assume they just get dirty.

If the switch ball sticks it causes a vacuum leak.

It’s on the list of to do, i was thinking the check ball was missing that caused the leak but it’s there, probably just stuck. Priority is exhaust leaks, noisy valves, idle speed, and brakes.. Thanks for the info, I bought the car in March and have more questions coming.

If the starter switch on your carb is complete, then probably just a cleaning is all it needs to fix your vacuum leak. You can check and see if the contacts are working at the same time and decide if you want to reconnect it again.
