power steering ram on a 53 Mayfair

Hello Packardians in USA
I bought an overhaul kit for the power ram from Merrits and the oil seal is a modern rubber type , the original is leather ( I think ) and requires a special tool for removal , it is also a smaller diameter than the new seal . I am assuming that the old seal is left in place and the new seal pushed in with some glue on top of the old one ? I contacted Merrits but they had no advice .

Regards Chris

Did you check the service manual?packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/servicemanual5154/Suspension_XVI.pdf

Yeah MM will not know how to rebuild one, they just sell parts.

Can you tell us what step you are on in relation to the service manual instructions, what tool they are saying to use?

Edit: Chris PM'ed me and he is referring to the RNR steps on p. 34 with tools 2BCD and 6.

Apologies to all , when looked again with strong glasses at the ram end I could see what I thought was the cylinder casting was actually 2 oil seals . I managed to prize them out with a lever and the new seals that Merrits supplied will fit well , problem solved .

Regards Chris .
