There should be a petcock on the side of the block that when the engine is filled with oil it will start to drain out there and that's when you know it is full. Much like filling up a rear differential case.
This is explained on page 20 of the owner's manual. It also gives a total capacity of 8 quarts on page 9. packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/343_OwnersManual.pdf
