I've seen a picture somewhere that shows a small sheet metal shield over the manifold heat valve thermostat spring on a 120 eight. My car is missing this piece. The manifold heat valve seems to work pretty well on my car, at least when it is hot and sitting with the engine idling, but I wonder if the lack of the small shield over the thermostatic spring might allow the heat valve to partially close when running down the road with a lot of under hood airflow. If it does, it could contribute to vapor lock when idling or after a brief shut down in hot weather by causing the manifold to run hotter than normal.

My overdrive was intermittent. It seemed electrical so I checked all connection top side and under and cleaned relay contacts. When I shift to 2nd gear and get rolling, the red overdrive indicator light didn’t come on. After I was out on the road and tried to engage overdrive by letting off the gas pedal, it would click, light turned on, and drop into overdrive.
I suspected the governor, so got under, removed the boot, disconnected it, removed it with my modified channel pliers, opened it up and cleaned it. The wire insulation was not in good, so I slipped a shrink sheath over it. The connection to the unit was iffy because the screw head was gone and the eyelet terminal was smooshed on held by a crushed washer. I checked with the flak master, who had a replacement but was away. I soldered it and the connection for the ground as well. Put it back together and reinstalled it. Works perfectly now. I am so proud of myself because in attempting this repair I didn’t break anything or hurt myself. Didn’t even hit my head under there. I’ve made several errand runs and everything works every time.Victory feels so good.
