The factory push nut holding the oil screen on, on the Twin Ultramatics is often needlessly broken. To avoid a trip to the hardware store (if you have the factory type or one like it), or to avoid damage to the pickup or valve body (if you have the aftermarket type) it is helpful to know the best course of action as towards removal of the push nut.
The original type is a thin spring steel. It is easily removed by using a wood chisel to gently pry one of the "ears" away from the shaft while gently lifting the screen off the stud. See first image below as well as the video. Many replacements push nuts, including the ones that I am currently using, are of somewhat of a different construction and are made of a much softer yet thicker steel. These generally cannot be pried off non-destructively but can be easily removed by placing a screwdriver as shown and simply hammering the "ear" out of position then repeating on the other as shown in the second and third photo. I wouldn't really advise it, but in a pinch you can tap the ears back nearly flat on this type of nut and reuse it. Regarding installation, the factory type can simply be pressed on by hand, but the aftermarket types often have to be driven on with a socket, hence the distorted appearance in the second and third photo. ![]() ![]() ![]()
