Did the one matching mine have a smaller flange?

Got the seal changed; that is a task I never want to do again. The clearance between the outermost edge of the nut and the inside of the flange is less than 1/16th of an inch.
I had to use an open-end wrench turned sideways, along with a large screwdriver for leverage, turning about a nut flat at a time, all while having the flange wedged so it wouldn't turn at the same time. There was a cloud of cursing which is still hovering over the Chicago Metro area.

I wonder if the nut or the flange are not a factory match. I doubt if a socket ground that thin would be of much use.

It worked fine for me on a 1939-40 transmission with the small u-joint flange

All flanges were identical. I.D. of flange is 1.625" (inch and 5/8) and your type nut used a 1 1/4" socket. All of the others used a 1 1/8" nut. I was able to fit a Tru-test socket onto the 1 1/4" nut with about .010" (ten thousanths) clearance. My Craftsman and Snap-on sockets would not fit. The Craftsman was .010" too large (1.635") and the Snap-on was .020 oversize (1.645"). Also, the transmission with your type of nut has a speedometer gear set up for a 454 rear end whereas the other transmissions were all set up for the standard 436. The 454 tranny was out of a "38 Six and I think that the rest were all '37s.

Thanks for the info and confirmation.
And yes, my transmission has a brass 454 tag on it.
