U said IN the valve stem, NOT around it. Most likely just replaceing the valve core would have fixxed it.

Tubes placed in excessively rusty wheels can and will develope leaks because the scale or sharp edges of rusted wheel will eventualy cut thru the tube. Probably in about 5K miles.

Excessively rusted beads ca be cleaned to SHINY metal with alot of work. DESPITE pitting, if the tire is installed with grease at the bead it will hold air just fine.

Look at the center section of wheel. If it is riveted t o the rim then most likely the wheel is for tube tires. If it is welded (spot welded) then most likely it is a tubeless wheel.

Look at the tires CLOSE. See if they were marked "BLEM" or "TUBETYPE" with a SPECIAL burned in branding iron.
