Questions re Universal power brake booster.

Mostly question for Craig but am curious if the new booster used on the Panther site car was the single or dual diaphragm and what the difference in assist is between the two. If a single was used, is there enough difference in boost that the pedal ratio might be able to be lowered?

Second question is re the mounting of a master cylinder. Are the boosters specific as to a particular size or could a smaller one be fitted if found that would more closely match the Packard bore.

Re second question:

I have not found any master cylinder less than 13/16 bore.
Another problem is MC piston stroke. NOTE that hte BTV has LONG stroke thus the 1:1 stock Packard pedal ratio.

ALSO any Power Unit used will need to have a long stoke to accomodate any small bore MC with a long stroke to preserve the 1:1 pedal ratio.

Although MPBrakes sold a dual diaphram, it was in 8 and 9 in diameter which is too wide to fit in the BTV location. I used a 7in one. A 1:1 pedal ratio absolutely would NOT work! Hence, the pedal relocation and mount change to get 3:1 ratio.

From MPBrake's catalog, it looks the MC-booster mounts are limited to a few standard configurations, but you'd have to ask them to be sure.

Thanks. I see ABS has 7" single and dual so was just wondering. Didn't see dimensions offhand but doesn't look too much longer. Anyone more in the business know the advantage (or disadvantage) a dual diaphragm would have over a single as to force required or generated.

Since the BTV was a single 6" or so diaphragm but narrow bore long stroke, just wondering if the dual 7" booster coupled with a slightly larger bore (such as the 13/16 PV8 found) and maybe dual cylinder config could make up the volume of the shorter stroke yet still come within reasonable expectations on force needed and fit the location.

Only buying one and trial fitting it would determine fitment for sure. That's what I did.

Craig

Where did the 55-6-7 Chevy mount the BTV and any idea as to pedal ratio? I notice on a Chevy site, they have a direct bolt in replacement for the BTV using the dual diaphragm 7" booster and a dual master cylinder.

This one appears a bit longer than we can use but maybe something along these lines with the smaller diameter master and no mounting bracket for those contemplating a change.

If someone is contemplating, maybe try this route with the dual booster and small cylinder in the standard spot and if it didn't work, then could always use the components in the vent hole area like Eric or PV8. At the worst, might be out some labor and possibly go back to larger cylinder.

Yeah, but Chevy had hanging pedals and thus a much higher ratio pedal. Also not that hte chevy has a MUCH LARGER diameter cylinder!!!

Agree. It would have to be larger with it up high to get the volume.

Another piece of data would be the volume of fluid expelled in a single average length stroke on the BTV vs the amount on a 3/4 or 13/16" cylinder. If you would post the number of small cylinder you found, might be worth a shot to see if one could be found cheaply enough to try & see the volume and what happens.

HH56,

I followed Eric's lead and mounted my booster on the firewall. I posted this picture some time ago. It may help.
