okay, update on the car. got the new pressure plate from Mike Dotson, thanks Mike!, and so i started to rebuild the torque converter. cleaned up one half of the casing tonight. i had forgotten how much a PITA it is to clean with a wire brush....even if it is on the end of a power drill.

thanks Ross for the tip.....the ones from the other venders were over 100 bucks...this one was 37 ;0) sweet!

Hank

more putting the torque converter back together. i used a blind hole puller to get those small bushings out. it worked great and autozone lets you rent it and you get your money back when you bring it back. i tried to show the sizes of the bushing installers that i used. everything went together very easy and very well, so enjoy the show.....but if you can find the show stopper....you get a cookie. man, i just can't catch a break!

Portlandon....if you see the problem...may i ask for your assistance on this piece, if it is still available?

oh and guys, in the very last picture....what do those O-rings go too. i have rebuilt the transmission complete to my knowledge and now the torque converter is almost done and i cannot tell where those o-rings go. they are in the baggy that has the paper seal for the top of the torque converter shaft. so i am very confused.

thanks,

Hank

look at image numbers 1473 and 1474.

That's not wear. The factory machined it that way.

well, i thought that at first since i didn't see any aluminum shavings inside of the converter when i first took it apart, but i didn't want to risk it that someone rebuild this once before and just reused it.

i plan on taking it to a transmission shop i know of that will ballance converters. that should help things when i go to use it.

thanks ;0)

Hank

some cool news and some very confusing things going on here.

1. the 6 1/8 inch holes are already drilled for me in this piece. remember i changed out the front pump rotor to a 40 spline and it says to drill these holes for 55. well, done...LOL!

2. why is there a bushing in the top of this piece? it does not show it on the parts diagram and i cannot find it from any of the parts vendors. does it really belong there oh gurus of the torque converter?

one thing i do remember we could not get the TC into the transmission all the way when i first bought it....i wonder if this bushign was impeeding forward progress into the transmission?

thanks,

Hank

That bushing is there for shaft #3.616, and yes, it's supposed to be there. It's #3.6183, "Spacer, Converter Reactor Thrust". It's there to keep that shaft from going side-to-side and up-down and all-around in the converter pump shaft assembly.

thanks for the information, but i do know that i have that part already, it is sitting on my work bench and was on the bottom side of the converter pump housing. this is actually in the shaft piece only. there is not a bushing listed for this in the parts diagram. was this some model year change maybe or something someone just did to keep debri out while in storage.

that part you are talking about has holes in it and pops into the bottom side. i'll see if my wife can take a pic of this part and send it to me so i can load it up to show you what i am talking about.

thanks for the investagation though

Hank

You might want to double-check that, as every Ultramatic converter I've seen (and I've seen a few) has that bushing and that should be the part number.
