thanks, but that is for front,,packard does not even have it listed, as i see it,, the bushings for the rear axle.
they list U bolt, but not an, exact torque. they have the asterisk..which indicates anything other than std torque there is a guide in the bushing, do you tighten it down till you botton it? which i have done, and torqued from there. thanks for your help,, this has bugged me for 40 years....... rik

There exists a standard torque chart based solely on bolt size and characteristics. When in doubt or in the absence of mfg'er torque specs use the chart. Probably google it. Sometimes the chart is available in some service manuals.

Methinks there is some confusion with terminology, here.
There is no such thing as a "rear load arm bushing". Each of the rear load arms pivot on a needle bearing, bolted through the #5 body bracket of the frame. There is, however, a bushing at the front of each of the two rear support arms (aka - torque arms), and BDeB correctly provided the torque spec for the locknut. Yet, since you mentioned "U bolt" in your last post, you must be referring to the four bushings at the rear of those rear support arms. The shop manual shows torque of 110-125 ft. lbs. for those U-bolts, followed by an asterisk, but there's no "about" about it. That asterisk is simply an indicator that the specification shown for this application is something other than the standard torque that one might otherwise expect for the size and thread of the fastener. The difference could be for a variety of reasons, but not important. The installation of those U-bolts and bushings, though covered under the Rear Axle section - Axle Case (Housing) Assembly, Installation. Since there's a spacer for each pair of those bushings, the shouldn't be any mystery about tightening. You couldn't achieve torque until after you bottomed out against the spacer. Don't confuse this with things like shock absorber (stem) grommets.

thanks for understanding, and your point. So the torque is 110-125..
i always found that confusing.. Packard,,,,just say torque to this............no ifs and or buts... thanks again,, rik

Tightening that requires special handling - that is, anything more than a particular torque specification - usually is covered in the shop manual.
Yet, be sure to check for clarifications and updates to service procedures (and torque specs) that might have been published in the factory newsletter and bulletins - via our Packard Service Index.
