That is the Idler Gear you should not touch it, if you are only replacing a pinion seal.

What is the correct adjustment? I have a '40 and am going thru the rear end and brakes. I don't have the postwar manual. Is mine maxed out or never been adjusted?

What is the proper torque for the nut on the yoke? My book says a preload drag of 25-30 inch pounds, that does not seem tight enough for the rear nut that tightens the nut on the pinion. I didn't know to mark it with paint before I took it off, but want to torque it to the correct tightness. Any help is much appreciated...

I'm not sure about adjusting the Ring Gear Idler manual says to adjust for .005 inch and tighten.
If I read the manual correct and your re-using the pinion bearing sleeve you just need to tighten the nut down until you get 2 to 2 1/2 pounds of drag to rotate the pinion shaft.

The referenced procedure is appropriate for just about any differential with pinion bearing preload set by a sleeve that is collapsed during initial assembly.
