Here is a good pic of pump #2. Note the casting number.
Here is also a closeup of the threaded plug area. You can see it was never drilled for a cotter pin. It was ground flat in preparation for a hole to be drilled.

In the bottom picture, near the left hand side, there is what appears to be a rather shiny BB. Poke at it with a sharp instrument to see how soft it is.

There is NO flat ground on them for drilling the cotter pin hole. Such a flat would not be needed in production.

My guess is that the flat is not a flat at all but rather most likely filled with lead.

Keith, you have some good instincts sometimes, but I unscrewed the plug and there is no hint of anything other than casting in the threads. That flat could have been a ground-off riser, but I'm not sure. The BB you referred to was a piece of dirt shiny from the camera flash.

On page 121 of the Master Parts and price list (price pages) I find #6480508 at $15.00 $25.00 $18.75. This number not found in the parts and supersessions list immediately preceeding this section.
The price list is dated September 1956, the parts list is dated December 1955. That may explain the discrepancy.

Thanx for the addit'l pix.

In consideration of retooling for an oil pump, I had acquired NOS gears, vac pump, and the late design oil pump body, but none of the PR valve parts, and I have not removed any of the pumps (yet) from my cars for inspection.

So, I'm curious as to how the valve as shown in your pic compares to what Keith has found in his experience with both early and late design pumps.

Meanwhile, what are the odds that the #6480508 is an application for the 56 Golden Hawk? (Anyone out there have access to a Stude parts book?) The 56J used the 352 Packard mill AND (unlike the Hash implementation) the Packard oil pump, but without the vacuum pump (given the electric WSW motor).

Perhaps one of the Stude brothers from the McKeesport area, who frequent these forums can answer that question. They are very knowledgeable about Stude cars and parts. Joe, are you reading this?

If you go to Studebaker Golden Hawk owners page and look under parts list there is complete parts list and numbers and illustrations the oil pump is listed as part 6480508 its on page pictured page 62 of 323 and part number is on page 70. The view has all the parts of the pump and numbers for each part listed. hope this helps

Your link is correct, but the site must be somehow programmed such that displayed URL always points to the home page .

Regardless, to get to that parts book, one needs to click on the "Options" link at top of the home page. Then, you'll find a link to the "56J Parts Catalog" (as a PDF file).

The GH version of the Packard oil pump is illustrated on page 63 of the PDF, but the part number is shown on page 70.

Thanks for pointing us in the right direction.

My only question now is whether 6480508 has the late design (plugged) pump body.

The information taken from page 6 of PDF file of the parts list states that info was taken from Studebaker Chasis parts catalog 1955-58 revised Jan 1961 I would assume this was the latest that would make 1956 cars approx. 5 years old most car companies don't usualy care about cars that old

The best thing for this would be to get factory oil pump drawing with the latest sub or change which ever term Packard used per standard manufacturing practice it would be dated to the changes and what the changes were. But any drawings from Studebaker -Packard are more than likely long gone unless someone picked up the engine drawings or the microfilm they were stored on.
