Well, if the pan has a hole in the side of it (besides the drain plug in front), its the Gear-Start Twin Ultramatic. If not then it may be a revised pan from 1948 through 54. Those models have the tiny screw cap on the main casting, I think.

I brought my oil pan into a local welding shop where they cut out my crappy welds and brazed in two new pieces of metal ($30). Now I have a functioning transmission oil pan!

My Packard made it to the fairgrounds and back! My generator rebuild isn't doing the job. I'm considering going to 12V, I don't feel like putzing with the 6V system any longer. I've had the generator and voltage regulator professionally rebuilt. It puts out 7.4V and the battery is new. When I got home, the battery was completely dead. I didn't idle much, drove about 30-40 mph the entire trip.

If anyone is interested, I captured over 300 photos from the Back to the Fifties car show, which hosted 11,745 cars this year:

You need to have the generator/regulator checked under load & in car to find out exactly what is happening. Sounds like the current section may need adjusting. 7.4 volts is fine so voltage regulator section seems to be working & will turn the light out but if the current output is limiting you to say 5 amps instead of 30 and you are pulling 10, it will never charge.
