Before sanding down , all chrome work etc needs to be removed. On these cars, it it a straight forward process? On some makes of cars like Bently, it's a real pain in the A... From what I hear. And nuts and bolts hard to get too. , so are all the little items needing taking off easy to take off? No nasty surprises ?

This book sounds like an interesting read. For sure will look out for it. There's a Packard
Restoration book I would like also.

Best guide to resto I've ever seen is: "Collector Car Restoration Bible" by Matt Joseph. He's had a restoration column in "Skinned Knuckles" magazine for like 35 years. It's the best mag on the subject, imho, and he's their best columnist, imho. Hundreds of color photos illustrate every step of a restoration, and it will answer any question you will ever have. You can get the book through Amazon.com.

Is it possible to order a sample from them, or maybe just a pint. Then over here have exact copy to match to.

Also found a company over here called Movac, they have Dupont paints, so may be just lucky here. They are 2 hours drive away.

be careful! an old formula (old pigments in an old base) does not tell you how to get current paint. Likewise chip charts are not color standards (never were). If the paint company has updated formulae or another person has had a good match done, use that.

Yes agree, modern paints are different and prob better quality. But at least it's something to work on. Here included is the new closest match to Orchard Green.

Here is one-Packard blue(dark almost black) is very,very close to Princeton Blue used on 93 Mitsubishi code AC10997. It matches up with the Packard Blue sample I have.

Here's what they said:-

Thank you Gary we will have a go at this.
If worst comes to worst if you can get the vehicle over to us (liaise with us) we could get one of our spectrophotometers on it and create the colour for you.
It will be a waterborne system though. Nothing scary about waterborne paints we've been using them since 1982. It's just that your vehicle will have been done in Nitro-Cellulose which is very hard to get hold of now. Cellulose wasn't a very good finish anyway. It's not very durable and required maintenance by polishing. Modern systems do not.

The system would be:
Always check tech data sheets and of course safety data?before?use.

From Bare metal:
Degrease thoroughly
Apply body fillers to get contour correct and flat to shape.
Blow off dust and degrease thoroughly.
?
Apply a Wash etch primer allow to dry then and the apply a High Build primer - flat this down.
Blow off and Degrease thoroughly and tack rag off.
?
Apply waterborne colour allow to dry
Tack rag off lightly
?Apply 2 component (isocyanate) Clearcoat allow to cure.
Polish out imperfections... done!
?This is NOT a DIY system. You'll need to have this done. I can recommend a couple of places for you to choose from.
The trouble with any vehicle and particularly a classic, is that EVERYONE can be an expert on colour and paint finish.
?If you want a decent job that will last years then get it done properly. Don't scrimp on the paint job...it's what everyone sees.
Use a one paint company system to ensure optimum performance and longevity. Don't mix primers, n clearcoats etc. Always a bad idea. You'll regret it.
??They will all be in waterborne material, you do realize this don't you? Cellulose has long gone!?

Paint spray here in England charge from $4,621 for basic paint change, if body work needed then much more. You can see why it's best over here to do as much work yourself as possible, ESP sanding down.

I seriously doubt Packard was using nitrocellulose in the fifties. My guess is they used synthetic enamel like everyone else.

The only car I know that was painted with lacquer in the early fifties was custom ordered Chrysler Crown Imperial limousines, and they were finished at the old Derham custom body works not at the Chrysler factory.

Furthermore I don't see why an English paint company can't get the formula when the Canadian or American branch of the same company can.

Are there any Sikkens, DuPont, PPG, or RM dealers in England?
