dumb question on early Packards...But what are those two cyclindical shaped things on the front of the car. shocks?? Bumpers? just curios thanks

the reason I ask is because a man i know has two dust covered twin sixes in his barn a touring and another with body by Fleetwood with the open chaufers compartment. and both of these have those canister types on the front end
