I just went on their Lucas' site and it says it exceeds all GL classifications and it is for older gear boxes.

"older gear boxes" to me means transmissions. Transmission grade gear oil is not suitable for differentials. It HAS TO BE "EP (GL-5)" rated. Check the container and see what it says in the specifications. JWL

I humbly suggest that GL4 is the correct oil for Packard transmissions with bronze synchro rings. GL 5 is a death sentence for the brass based components such as synchro rings and bushes. It turns the outer surfaces black and grinds off when friction is applied. I used GL5 in my R6 OD but found that I had a honey looking oil with brass tinges as brass was worn out by the friction additives of the GL5 oil reacting with the bronze components. The GL5 is as suggested best for differentials. I was astonished to discover that GL4 is still the recommended gearbox oil for my 1996 Mitsubishi van as it has bronze synchro rings. You may of course do as you wish...I would suggest that you at least Google ( or explore) the correct oil for manual Packard gearboxes. PT

Maybe I wasn't clear. This Lucas W85-140 is for my differential, not the transmission, I know that transmissions take transmission fluid. I said gearbox thinking it was the same as differential. Several of you said that you use Valvoline W85-140 in your Packards for years and it is OK. I can still buy Valvoline but I think Lucas is a fine product. Any last suggestions, comments or warnings? I welcome the knowledge you all have. This is my first Packard.

I see the distinction now. OK I will check that it is EP GL5 rated for my differential. Thank you for this information.

I just talked to Valvoline 800# and she assured me that W85-90, GL 5 is correct for my Clipper. They also make Napa's brand.
