OD trans questions

I have bought an overdrive transmission and clutch assy. I found someone that will remove and replace the transmission plus change out the clutch assy for about 175. Question: I don't know how the OD works. Would somebody explain how I will operate that once configured. And will the transmission be ruined if the OD transmission is installed without all the extra parts that is part Of that conversion? Thanks in advance

Have the work done by a shop that understands OD trans, they can set it up so no damage will happen

Operation depends on which car and model OD you have. The two choices are the R9 which was used 40-mid 48 and the R11 from mid 48-56.

The operation is similar but slightly different so exact instructions depend on the unit. R9s require more and specific electrical parts than the R11 and will not function without them.

The R11 is much simpler electrically and modern components can be substituted. There are also repro and aftermarket items available. With a bare minimum of items even a completely manual operation can be performed.

For the drive home make sure the OD case has lubricant and the OD knob on right of steering wheel is pulled out. That will keep the OD locked out as if it were not there. If the knob and cable is one of the missing or not hooked up items just wire the lever on the drivers side so it points to the front of car until you can get the cable connected.

Here are instructions provided when the R11 was introduced in mid 48. The 53 operation is the same.

You state that you will have the trans will be installed and ask if harm will be done if you don't install "all those extra parts".

Well, if you don't install "all those extra (and necessary) parts" you cannot operate the OD

Not sure what all your mechanic is installing and this will seem obvious but a reminder to make sure the solenoid, governor and speedo cable are mounted to the OD so all the openings are plugged before your drive home.
