No original gasket between fenders and running board since the vulcanized rubber was also at those locations. You'll see in my photo I used fender welt, which isn't correct, but provided a nice way to "bookend" the raised rubber features on mine that ran all the way to the fenders (originals didn't have this).
I suggest some form of gasket whether rubber sheet or something to protect the fender paint.
